The Columbus Clippers have figured out how to pitch the visiting Indianapolis Indians during the teams’ series at Huntington Park this week. After giving up 22 runs to the Indians in the first three games, Clippers’ hurlers have limited Indy to just three runs in the next two. On Saturday, Columbus beat the Indians, 4-1.
Joey Cantillo started for the Clippers and set the tone by going 3.1 shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five. Cantillo was replaced by another starter, Aaron Davenport (1-0), who went the rest of the way and picked up his first win. In his 5.2 innings of work, Davenport gave up a run on three hits and struck out five.
The Clippers matched Indianapolis with only four hits, all singles, on the night, but six walks, three wild pitches, and timely base knocks helped them put together four runs. Johnkensy Noel, Chase DeLauter, and Milán Tolentino each had an RBI. The fourth run came to the plate on one of the Indy wild pitches.
The clubs wind up their six-game series Sunday at Huntington Park with the first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. A Clippers’ win will give them their third straight series win. Doug Nikhazy (3-4, 4.82) gets the start for Columbus and will face Bubba Chandler (2-1, 2.60). The game ends the first half of the season in International League play.
