In a game they had to win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, the Columbus Aviators staged a late comeback to pull off a 36-29 victory Saturday afternoon over the Birmingham Stallions.
The win moved their record to 3-6 and the Aviators now await Sundayās results to see if theyāll still have a chance at the postseason when they enter their final game of the season next Sunday.
Here are three takeaways from a wild one in front of 9,217 at Historic Crew Stadium:
1.Ā Ā After on-and-off again (mostly on-again) struggles from quarterback Jalen McClendon throughout the season, the Aviators turned to another Jalen ā Morton ā to start at QB for the must-win game. How did that work out? Morton totaled 330 yards of offense (213 passing yards, 117 rushing yards) and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing), both of which were franchise records. He also made an incredibly precise pass on the two-point conversation to tie the game at 29-29 with 1:37 left. It wasnāt a perfect day for Morton ā he completed under 50% of his passes (14-for-30) and threw an interception early in the fourth quarter that could have iced the game away. Still, thereās no doubt that he did more than enough to keep the job heading into week ten.

2.Ā Ā Despite the 29 points put up by the Stallions, the Aviators defense put up another good performance. They limited Birmingham to 237 yards of offense for the game and Thompson-Robinson finished just 16-35 for 157 yards, a pair of interceptions, and was sacked four times. Cornerback DJ Miller Jr. had one of those interceptions: a 39-yard pick-six with 1:15 left in the game as the Stallions were driving for the win.
3.Ā The opening sequence was somewhat of a glitch in the matrix. After the Aviators picked off Stallionsā quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the first play of the game, Morton fumbled the ball on fourth down while trying to make a pass. The Stallionsā Alex Cook grabbed it and ran all the way in for a touchdown and a 6-0 Birmingham lead. But the extra point is blocked and then picked up by Columbusā Nehemiah Shelton, who returns it back the other way for what would be a one-point play. That made the score 6-1 Stallions ā which is a first in UFL history.
