After falling 5-0 in their doubleheader opener against the Louisville Bats Saturday, the Columbus Clippers salvaged a split with a 7-3 nightcap victory. Milan Tolentino powered the Clippers’ win with a grand slam home run, his seventh long ball of the season. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s twin bill:
1. After Friday’s rainout, both games Saturday were seven innings in length. In the first contest, the Clippers managed only two hits, as Louisville starter Brandon Leibrandt, son of former Big League pitcher Charlie, was efficient in his six innings of work. The left-hander allowed the Clips’ two base knocks and walked only one, while striking out four. He is now 2-2 on the season.
2. The Clippers cannot be accused of locking their players into defensive positions. In the first game, with the recently promoted Ralphy Velazquez getting time at first base, C.J. Kayfus was in left field. Juan Brito, usually a second baseman, was at third base, while Tolentino, who has spent most of his time this season at third, was at second. Kody Huff caught the opener, then moved to third in the nightcap. Versatility on display!
3. Columbus starter Ryan Webb had a quality performance in the second game, earning his first win of the season. He had a rough beginning to this year’s campaign, but has pitched well lately. On Saturday, he blanked the Bats for five innings and appeared to run out of gas, walking three batters in the sixth, which led to two of those runners scoring after he left with two outs.

Columbus and Louisville wrap up their six-game series with a Sunday tilt at Huntington Park beginning at 1:05 p.m. LHP Logan Allen (2-1, 5.45) gets the start for the Clippers with RHP Sam Benschoter (2-1, 5.96) taking the mound for the Bats.
Normally, Monday is not a “playing” day for Triple-A teams, but the Clips head to Toledo to begin a series with the Mud Hens on Memorial Day. The first pitch for that game is set for 5:05 p.m.
