It was a much-awaited game. Because the OHSAA added three divisions to boys basketball, there was now a chance in Division I that there would be two teams from Central Ohio that could compete for a state championship in the 102-year history of tournament play in the Buckeye State.

Before I get branded as a sports softie by the headline of this commentary, please know that I believe that champions should get the biggest trophy. Having said that, it shouldn’t be the only award given at the end of the season.

I have participated in and watched a lot of competitions. The past couple of weekends, I’ve spent days at UD Arena, taking in girls and boys state basketball finals. Central Ohio was lucky to have five different teams vying for the OHSAA title. [MORE]

Buckeyes

An unfortunate turn of events at the end of third period for the Ohio State women’s hockey team led to overtime with Wisconsin and, ultimately, a Badgers’ 4-3 NCAA title win.

Fury

The Columbus Fury hosted the Atlanta Vibe Sunday at Nationwide Arena in PVF action. The Vibe beat the Fury, taking three sets to none for the victory. 

Buckeyes

With five home runs, the Ohio State softball squad completed a sweep of the Michigan State Spartans, winning 24-2 in five innings in East Lansing Sunday. 

Colleges

It was Capital’s turn to host their annual women’s lacrosse non-conference tilt with Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops scored late to beat the Comets, 17-16, Wednesday.

Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets announced Tuesday that they have signed Evan Gardner to a three-year entry level contract beginning with the 2025-26 season.
