The visiting Toledo Mud Hens took an early 3-0 lead against the Columbus Clippers Saturday. The Clippers fought back to tie the game twice before falling 6-5 in 11 innings at Huntington Park.
The Mud Hens scored two runs in the first inning against Columbus starter Will Dion who gave up four hits and a walk in his only inning of work. Randy Labaut ceded a run in the next two innings and, going to the bottom of the third, Toledo led 3-0.
The Clippers tied the score at 3-3 after scoring a run in each of the third, fourth, and sixth innings. In the bottom of the third, Dom Nuñez, who had tripled, crossed the plate on Christian Cairo’s sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, Kyle Manzardo scored from third when Myles Straw grounded into a double play behind him with no outs. Columbus tied the score in the sixth on Johnathan Rodriguez’s solo home run, his 15th round-tripper of the season.
After the third inning, Columbus relievers Connor Gillispie and Peter Strzelecki combined to blank the Mud Hens through the ninth and the teams went to extra frames.
Both sides scored two in the tenth. The Clippers’ runs came with two outs when Straw singled with the bases loaded. The score was tied at 5-5 going to the eleventh.
The Mud Hens pushed across a run against Columbus lefthander John Doxakis. With runners at first and second after a walk, Doxakis hit two batters to force in the go-ahead score. In the bottom of the frame, the Clippers got their “ghost” runner to third but could not get him in and the Mud Hens came away with a 6-5 victory.
Doxakis (1-3) was charged with the loss, despite not giving up an earned run in his inning of work. The runner placed at second base to start each half of an extra inning does not count as an earned run. Toledo’s Devin Sweet (5-5), who was charged with a blown save, picked up the win. Michael Bienlien earned his first save of the season.
The Clippers get two days off before heading to Indianapolis for a six-game series with the Indians beginning Tuesday.
