After four days off, the Columbus Clippers got back on the diamond Friday, looking to extend their three-game winning streak at Louisville. The Clips jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings, then held on for a 6-4 victory.

Columbus got on the board right away against Bats’ starter Justus Sheffield when José Tena led off the game with his 17th home run of the season. Juan Brito then doubled and came home three batters later when Gabriel Arias singled. It was Arias’s first game with Columbus this season after playing in 53 games for Cleveland.

The Clippers scored three more runs in the second. Dom Nuñez and Tena walked. Brito hit his second double of the game, plating Nuñez. Tena scored when Kyle Manzardo grounded out. Brito scored on a Johnathan Rodriguez single.

The Bats scored their first two runs in the fourth inning. Doug Nikhazy, who was starting his fourth game for the Clippers, gave a up a walk and a single with one out. Hernán Pérez then doubled to knock in both runners. They were the first runs given up by Nikhazy this season in 21 innings pitched. He left the game after the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Louisville cut the lead to one with two more scores. Erik González reached on a Tena fielding error at third. It was his sixth game in a row with a defensive miscue. After a sacrifice bunt, the Bats reeled off three straight hits to bring in two runs.

Columbus added an insurance run in the ninth. Brito walked to lead off the inning. After two strikeouts, Arias singled, moving Brito to second. In the next at-bat, Louisville catcher Michael Trautwein, who had picked off a Clipper baserunner at second earlier in the game, attempted to nail Arias at first. His throw was off target and Brito scored.

The Columbus bullpen had a another strong night, allowing just one earned run in its five innings of work. Erik Sabrowski (3-1) picked up the win and Andrew Walters earned his third save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth. Sheffield (0-2) was pinned with loss.

The Clippers and Bats resume their three-game series with a match-up Saturday. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field.
