Clippers power their way to win over Memphis

The Columbus Clippers kicked off a 12-game homestand with a power-driven 8-6 win on Tuesday over the Memphis Redbirds in front of a sell-out crowd at Huntington Park.

The Clippers got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Johnathan Rodriguez and George Valera each drove in a run with a base hits. In the third, Bryan Lavastida added to the lead with a solo home run, his seventh of the season.

The Redbirds cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of that frame, Columbus countered with two more runs. Johnathan Rodriguez hit one of his four singles on the day and drove in José Tena who had doubled then stolen third. Kyle Manzardo scored on a throwing error and Rodriguez came home on a Valera sacrifice fly.

Memphis tied the score, 6-6, with three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. the Clippers would take the lead for the final time with a Valera two-run bomb of fthe video board in right center field in the bottom of the seventh. Valera finished the day with four RBIs. Tena also had a productive game, coming up a home run short of the cycle. In addition to his two runs batted in, Rodriguez scored three times.

Erik Sabrowski (4-1) was charged with a blown save for ceding the tying two Redbird runs in the seventh but picked up the win as Columbus rallied in the bottom of that inning. Andrew Walters earned his fifth save of the season, tossing a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts. Nick Robertson (0-2) was pinned with the loss in relief.

The Clippers and Redbirds go back at it Wednesday with an afternoon affair at Huntington Park. The first pitch is set for 12:05 p.m.
