The Columbus Clippers showed plenty of fight Thursday night but it wasn’t enough as the Memphis Redbirds came away with a 6-5 win. The loss snapped a modest three-game winning streak for Columbus.
Trouble brewed from the outset as Memphis got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI single by César Prieter off Clippers starting pitcher Doug Nikhazy. Nikhazy (2-1) labored through five innings, taking his first loss of the campaign. He allowed six runs on eight hits, walking two batters and striking out the same.
The difference in the game proved to be the three solo round-trippers Nikhazy surrendered in the third inning. Jordan Walker, Iván Herrera, and Lukan Baker all went deep for the Redbirds to build a 5-0 lead.
Columbus battled back valiantly after that. The Clippers had their share of offensive success on Thursday. Johnathan Rodriguez got the scoring started for the Clip Show with a two-run RBI single in the third off Memphis starter Ian Bedell.
Columbus’s most prolific scoring came in the fourth inning when left fielder Goerge Valera hit a solo shot to draw the Clippers within a run. José Tena finished the scoring in the inning with an RBI triple.
Tena rounded out the Clippers’ offense in the 8th inning with an RBI single. He finished the night with three base knocks, the only Clipper to have a multi-hit night. The Clippers had their chances. All told, they left 11 runners on base Thursday night.
Delaware Ohio native and Ohio State University product Jacob Bosiokovic (4-3) tossed two scoreless relief innings to earn his fourth win of the season for the Redbirds. Ryan Loutos picked up his tenth save.
The Clippers and Redbirds continue their six-game series Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
