After winning the series opener at St. Paul Tuesday, the Columbus Clippers were on the verge of another victory Wednesday afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead into the eighth inning. The Saints had other ideas, pushing across four runs in the eighth and holding on for a 4-2 comeback win.

The Clippers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. Estevan Florial knocked in both tallies. In the third, he singled to drive in Will Brennan and, in the fourth, he walked with the bases loaded to force in George Valera.

Columbus got another strong outing from its starter. Matthew Boyd was on the mound for the second time as a Clipper, continuing his rehab efforts after Tommy John surgery last year. The Cleveland Guardians signed him in June. Boyd went six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, striking out seven, and not issuing a walk.

The Saints came back in the eighth with a hit batter, a Clippers’ error, and four hits. The loss went to reliever Sam Hentges (1-1), who is also with Columbus on a rehab assignment. Sam Blewett (5-2) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win and Diego Castillo picked up his seventh save.

The Clippers and Saints return to action at CHS Field Thursday at 8:07 p.m. Ryan Webb will be making his first Triple-A start for Columbus. He was drafted by the Guardians in the fourth round of the 2021 draft and has been with Double-A Akron so far this season. For St. Paul, it will be Zebby Matthews (1-2).
