The Columbus Clippers salvaged a 5-1 win in the nightcap of their twin bill at Iowa Friday, after falling 12-3 in the opener. The Clippers and Cubs split a doubleheader Thursday in the first two games of their scheduled six-game series, before Iowa posted a 4-3 win Friday night at Principal Park.

In the first game Saturday, the Clippers put together a 3-0 lead after the first two innings. Gabriel Arias hit his fourth triple of the season to knock in two runs in the first and Estevan Florial hit a solo home run in the second, his fifth long ball of the season.

After that it was all Iowa, as the Cubs scored 12 straight runs. Iowa’s Darius Hill had three hits in as many at-bats, knocking in three runs and scoring twice. Matt Shaw also had three RBIs  on three hits for the Cubs, including his second home run of the campaign.

None of the Clippers’ three pitchers had a good outing in the opener. Starter Triston McKenzie (2-2), who took the loss, lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, including three homers. Erik Sabrowski gave up two runs in just a third of an inning and Zak Kent was tagged with five runs in two inning of work.

The win in game one went to Cubs’ reliever Lucas Luetge (5-2) who tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Cam Sanders finished off the game with three strikeouts for Iowa in the top of the seventh inning.

It was different story for the Columbus pitching staff in the second game. Starter Will Dion (4-3) posted his third quality start in a row. He earned the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing only one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out six. Peter Strzelecki finished the game for the Clippers, striking out three of the six batters he faced.

Columbus spotted Iowa with a run in the second inning, but then scored five runs in the fourth and fifth combined. George Valera came on as a pinch-hitter in the fourth and, in his second at-bat, hit a two-run homer, his 11th roundtripper of the season. He also scored twice in the win.

The loss went to Cubs’ starter Connor Noland (3-1), his first this season. He gave up five runs, only two of which were earned. Iowa committed three errors on the day, two by second baseman James Triantos.

Columbus and Iowa finish up their series Sunday at Principal Park with the first pitch scheduled for 2:08 p.m. The Clippers’ Ryan Webb (0-0) is scheduled to make his second Triple-A start. He will face veteran Adrian Houser (0-0), who the Chicago Cubs signed after his release by the New York Mets in July.
