The Columbus Clippers and Gwinnett Stripers had hit well in the first five games of their series in suburban Atlanta. The Clippers had outscored Gwinnett 30-26 in taking four of the five contests.

In the Sunday finale, starters Doug Nikhazy for the Clippers and A.J. Smith-Shawver for the Stripers did their jobs with Gwinnett coming away with a 1-0 win.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Drake Baldwin homered with two outs. It was his 10th long ball of the season.

The excitement for the Clippers came in the top of the ninth. With two outs and nobody on, Gabriel Arias singled. Myles Straw came in as a pinch runner for Arias and promptly stole second base. Micah Pries then singled and Straw was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run.

Nikhazy (5-3) suffered the tough loss, going seven innings and allowing only one run on the Baldwin homer. He gave up six hits and a walk, and struck out two. Reliever Allan Winans (7-4) tossed four shutout innings for the Stripers, allowing only four hits and a walk while striking out two.

Because of the Labor Day holiday, the Clippers will not take Monday off. Instead, they’ll travel back to Columbus to host the Durham Bulls at Huntington Park beginning at 6:05 p.m. Logan Allen (3-1) will take the hill for the Clippers.
