After a day off Wednesday, the Columbus Clippers and Durham Bulls were back at it Thursday at Huntington Park. The Clippers took a 2-0 lead early. The Bulls tied things up in the middle innings. The Clips kept the “ghost” runner from scoring in the top of the 10th inning, then scored in the bottom ot that frame for a 3-2 victory.

Columbus took the lead in the first inning when Johnathan Rodriguez singled to drive in Angel Martínez. It was Rodriguez’s team-leading 79th RBI of the season. The Clippers went up 2-0 in the third on Juan Brito’s solo shot, his 19th long ball of the campaign.

The Bulls recorded a single run in the fifth inning, followed by a single run in the sixth. The first score came on a ground ball out with a runner at third base, the second on a bases-loaded walk. Columbus starter Ryan Webb (2-0) had another strong outing. He went five innings and allowed only one run on five hits and three walks, while striking out four. He has an ERA of just 1.38 through his five Clippers’ starts.

The game went to the 10th inning knotted at 2-2. Relief pitcher Tanner Burns (4-2) came on for Columbus and blanked Durham, striking out Kenny Piper to leave the ghost runner, Ronny Simon, stranded at third base.

Burns earned his fourth win of the season when Brito singled to drive in Christian Cairo from third in the bottom of the 10th. Durham reliever Nathan Wiles (6-3) was charged with the loss. The Columbus relief corps of Burns, Zak Kent, Andrew Walters, Nic Enright, and Franco Aleman allowed only one run and four hits in their combined five innings of work.

The Clippers and Bulls resume their series Friday with a game at 7:05 p.m. Joey Cantillo (2-1) will take the hill for Columbus, facing Joe Rock (6-6).
