Typically, baseball teams that clinch a playoff spot and have regular season games remaining, have a bit of a letdown, especially the next day. The Columbus Clippers flipped the script Thursday when four pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter en route to a 2-0 win over the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field.
Connor Gillispie (5-7) started for Columbus and went five innings, allowing only two walks and striking out seven. Gillispie earned the win. Randy Labaut followed, tossing two perfect innings. Then, it was Anthony Gose and Tanner Burns, who each faced only three Toledo batters in their single innings of work. Burns picked up his third save.
On the offensive side, the Clippers scored single runs in the first and sixth innings. In the first, Tyler Freeman doubled to lead off the frame, then took third on an error. Raynel Delgado followed with an RBI single. In the sixth, Johnathan Rodriguez singled to drive in Delgado. Columbus finished the game with five hits.
Columbus and Toledo will play the fourth game of their six-game series Friday with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
The Clippers have three more regular season games after which they will head to Omaha for a best-of-three playoff series with the Storm Chasers for the International League title. The winner of that series will play the Pacific Coast League champion in a one-game championship contest on Sept. 28 in Las Vegas.
