Buckeye men's soccer wins Big Ten title, top seed in tourney

The Ohio State men’s soccer team topped the Maryland Terrapins, 2-1, in College Park Sunday. With the victory, the Buckeyes claimed a share of the Big Ten title and the top seed going into the post-season tournament, which starts this upcoming week.

The Bucks scored both of their goals against Maryland in the first half of Sunday’s contest. The first score came from Thomas Gilej at the 13:49 mark. New Albany alum Ashton Bilow added a goal at 33:08.

The Terps got on the board when Luca Constabile scored in the 50th minute. For the next 40 minutes, the Buckeyes’ defense took over, shutting the Maryland offense down and earning the 2-1 victory.

Both Ohio State and Indiana finished the Big Ten season with a league record of 7-1-2. The teams battled to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 27 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The tiebreaker for the #1 seed in the post-season tourney went to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State will play in the Big Ten semi-finals next Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Ill, which is a soccer-specific venue southwest of downtown Chicago, It is home to the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL. The Buckeyes will face the winner of the Washington/Michigan State game.
