Ohio State exits NCAA tourney in second round

The Ohio State women’s basketball team (26-7, 13-5 Big Ten) hosted the Tennessee Volunteers (24-9, 8-8 SEC) in a second-round game Sunday at the Schottenstein Center. The Buckeyes came in as the No. 4 seed, while the Vols were seeded No. 5. Tennessee won 82-67 to advance to the Sweet 16.

Ohio State was up 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, after being ahead by as many as 11 during the frame. The Vols took their first lead in the second quarter, 27-25, with four minutes to go before the break and led 40-35 at halftime.

Tennessee added two points to its lead in the third quarter by outscoring OSU 26-24. It was the most points scored in a quarter Sunday by both teams. The fourth quarter was much different as the Vols held the Buckeyes to only eight points, while scoring 16, for a final tally of 82-67, Tennessee.

Even though OSU had better field goal and three-point shooting percentages, Tennessee shot significantly more than the Buckeyes – 71-54 from the field and 34-12 from outside the arc. The Vols also scored 37 points off turnovers, compared to 15 by Ohio State.

OSU’s Jaloni Cambridge and Tennessee’s Taylasia Cooper each had 19 points to lead their respective teams. Cotie McMahon added 17 for the Buckeyes. Cambridge also paced Ohio State with eight assists. Ajae Petty and Taylor Thierry each had six rebounds for OSU.

Tennessee will play the winner of Texas/Illinois, who play Monday. That Sweet 16 game will be played Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
