We’ll have to update the record books because this homer broke our previous single-season record of 75 (in 2015) ‼️ #GoBucks https://t.co/r1FqWTOInd pic.twitter.com/nqXfox56iG
The Ohio State softball squad (26-6-1) gave up four runs in the top of the first inning to the visiting Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons (5-16) at Buckeye Field Tuesday, but that would not be the takeaway.
The Buckeyes scored seven in the bottom of the inning and went on to win 11-6. OSU hit seven home runs in the game, the fifth of which set a new program record for home runs in a season, 76. The previous mark of 75 was set in 2015.
The Bucks have been a power-hitting team all season. In Sunday’s series finale at Michigan State, five different players hit a home run each en route to a 24-2 five-inning victory. All in all, Ohio State hit 11 homers over the three-game weekend.
Tuesday’s game saw six different players go long, with Kami Kortakrax hitting two bombs. Hadley Parisien, Sami Bewick, Jasmyn Burns, Morgan Frye, and Taylor Cruse all left the park against the Mastodons. Parisien and Bruns now lead the Buckeyes with 12 round-trippers on the season.
Reliever Kennedy Kay (7-2) went 6.1 innings for Ohio State and picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks, while striking out eight. It was junior’s 16th appearance of the season, which includes seven starts.
There was another milestone reached Tuesday. Buckeye head coach Kirin Kumar recorded the 200th win of her career. Before coming to Columbus this season, Kumar had 174 wins at Miami University in four seasons.
Ohio State is right back in action Wednesday, as the Akron Zips (14-15) come to Buckeye Field for a game beginning at 5:00 p.m.
