The Ohio State softball team (27-6-1) won their second non-conference game in as many days, downing the Akron Zips (14-16) 13-6 Wednesday at Buckeye Field. OSU’s Jasmyn Burns hit two home runs and a double to pace the Bucks with six runs batted in. It was Ohio State’s ninth win in a row.
The Buckeyes jumped into the lead with three runs in the first inning, five in the second, and three in the third to take an 11-5 lead. Akron posted their first five runs in the third inning and added one in the sixth, while OSU recorded two additional scores in the sixth inning.
Burns, a sophomore catcher from Menifee, Cal., now leads the Buckeyes with 14 home runs and moved her batting average up to .474. Taylor Cruse had a single and a sacrifice fly against the Zips and drove in three runs. Sami Bewick reached on a double and a walk, giving her a team-high on-base streak of 31 games.
Reliever Layna Gerhard picked up the win to remain perfect at 4-0. She went the final 4.1 innings, allowing only one unearned run on six hits and two walks, while striking out five. The freshman from Hockessin, Del. has appeared in 14 games this season and has an earned run average of 3.64.
Ohio State remains at home for a weekend Big Ten series against the Indiana Hoosiers (22-8, 2-3). The Buckeyes are 5-1 in the conference. The three-game set with the Hoosiers will feature single games on Saturday (2:00 p.m.), Sunday (1:00 p.m.), and Monday (7:00 p.m.).
