After winning their first two games of the season, the Columbus Clippers came up just short in Sunday’s series finale, falling to the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-5, at Fifth Third Field. The Clippers get a day off before opening their home schedule at Huntington Park Tuesday against the St. Paul Saints.
For the third straight game, the Mud Hens took a lead in the bottom of the first inning. Unlike Friday and Saturday, when they scored just one run to open the game, they pushed three across Sunday to take a 3-0 lead.
Columbus scored one run in the fourth inning when catcher Cody Huff singled to drive in Angel Martínez. Toledo stretched their lead with another three-spot in the fifth, including a double from Hao-Yu Lee that knocked in two runs.
Columbus cut the lead to 6-2 in the sixth. Justin Boyd singled to bring in Christian Cairo. Then in the ninth, Will Will Wilson knocked in Juan Brito with a single. DH Dom Nuñez doubled and two more Clippers scored. Nuñez, the potential tying run, was stranded in scoring position when the inning ended.
The hottest players for Columbus in the opening three-game series were Will Wilson (.500), Dayan Frias (.429), and Juan Brito (.417). Angel Martínez recorded four runs batted in, while Wilson and Brito added three. Frias posted a .556 on-base percentage.
Tuesday’s game with the St. Paul Saints begins at 6:15 p.m. at Huntington Park. It is another Tansky Toyota Dime-a-Dog Night.
