Wetzel leads Buckeyes to home win over Lewis

The #18-ranked Ohio State volleyball team (14-10, 9-5) welcomed the #14 Lewis University Flyers (20-8, 10-5) to the Covelli Center Saturday for a key MIVA matchup. It was Senior Night for the Buckeyes on what was the final home match of the regular season. OSU won the first two sets in overtime and came away with a 3-1 victory.

The match was tight early with the Buckeyes winning the first two sets, 28-26 and 26-24. The Flyers took the third set 25-22 after leading most of the way. The fourth and deciding set went to Ohio State, 25-19. 

Junior Shane Wetzel paced the Buckeyes in three offensive categories with 20 kills, 10 digs, and two aces. Freshman Daniel Henwood Rodriguez led all players with 41 assists. Freshman Stanislaw Chacinski had another solid match with 13 kills, eight digs, and four assists.

Ohio State’s three seniors had good performances as well. Kyle Teune recorded nine kills and seven digs. Thomas Leahey and Cole Young, an Olentangy Liberty grad, each added six kills.

The Buckeyes finish up the regular season with two road matches against the Quincy Hawks (8-17, 2-12) at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill. Friday’s match begins at 8:00 p.m., while the action on Saturday gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
