Columbus left-hander Parker Messick took the mound Thursday for his second Triple-A start. His first was last Wednesday when he went four scoreless innings in the Clippers’ home win over St. Paul, but he didn’t figure into the decision.

Messick’s start Thursday was on the road against the Worcester Red Sox and this time he went five innings without giving up a run, earning his first win as a Clipper. Columbus downed the Red Sox, 2-1.

The Clippers got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Petey Halpin hit a solo home run, his first long ball of the season, with two outs. The Clips took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Kyle Datres scored from third base on a wild pitch.

The Red Sox were kept off board by Messick for five innings, then Zak Kent for two and Andrew Misiaszek for one. Misiaszek allowed a run in the ninth, his second inning of work, but shut the door when he got Nathan Hickey on strikes, stranding runners at second and third.

The teams play the next game of their six-game series on Friday at Polar Park beginning at 6:05 p.m. The Clippers are up two games to one in the series.
