This week’s series in Worcester was a weather adventure for the Columbus Clippers. Rained out on Tuesday and snowed out on Saturday, with four inches of the white stuff on the ground, the teams were able to get only five games of the scheduled six in the books. Worcester rallied to nab the finale on Sunday, 8-5.
The WooSox got on the board first with a two-out run in the bottom of the first inning. The Clippers responded with two runs in the fourth. Juan Brito led off the inning with his second home of the season. The Clippers took the lead when Will Wilson scored on a Worcester double play behind him.
The Red Sox tied the score in the bottom of the fourth. Columbus took the lead back with a run in the fifth on a Brito sacrifice fly. Worcester answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to retake the lead, 4-3. Nick Sogard doubled in both runs for the WooSox off Clippers’ reliever Andrew Walters. One of the runs was charged to Walters, the first he has allowed this season in his six appearances.
Columbus retook the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Will Brennan knocked in the seventh-inning score with a single, while Kody Huff singled to drive in the run in the eighth. In the see-saw battle, it was Worcester that had the final say with four runs in the bottom of the eighth with four hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.
Columbus reliever Ryan Webb (0-1) was charged with the loss in his first decision of the season. He blanked the WooSox in the sixth and seventh innings, but gave up the four runs in their eighth-inning rally. Nick Burdi (1-0) earned the win for Worcester going the final 1.1 innings.
The Clippers get a day off Monday, then welcome the Louisville Bats to Huntington Park for a six-game series beginning Tuesday. Kolby Allard (0-0) will be on the mound for Columbus in the opener. It will be Allard’s third start of the season. The first pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
