Coming into Sunday’s series finale, the Ohio State softball team (33-10-1, 8-5) and the Penn State Nittany Lions (20-20, 6-7) had each won a game. OSU’s Reagan Milliken hit three home runs Sunday to power the Buckeyes past Penn State, 14-11.
Milliken became just the third Buckeye to hit three long balls in a game. Amy Haug and Jamee Juarez are the others to have accomplished the feat, with Juarez doing it more recently, in February of 2006.
The Nittany Lions took up where they left off in their big win Saturday, scoring four times in the first inning to take an early lead. The Bucks took a 6-4 lead going to the bottom of the fourth, but Penn State responded with three in the bottom of the inning.
Each squad scored at least a run in the next three innings, but Ohio State got the best of it, outscoring the Nittany Lions 8-4 for the 14-11 victory. Milliken finished with four hits and five runs batted in on the day to pace the Buckeyes.
Morgan Frye also had a big day, going 3-for-3 and knocking in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning. Home run leader, Jasmyn Burns, stayed in the ballpark Sunday, but had three hits, while Skylar Limon posted three RBIs.
Starter Lorin Boutte (15-7) went all the way for Ohio State. She gave up 10 earned runs on 13 hits, but struck out three to pick up her 15th win. The loss was charged to Abigail Britton (6-9), who had earned the win Saturday for Penn State.
The Buckeyes are back in action at Dayton Wednesday in a non-conference matchup with the Flyers. The first pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
