The Columbus Blue Jackets found out Wednesday, when the Montreal Canadiens beat the Carolina Hurricanes, that they were eliminated from playoff contention. The Jackets had one game left after that as they welcomed the New York Islanders to Nationwide Arena for the 82nd and final game of their season.
Whatever was expected of the Blue Jackets, who had a five-game winning streak on the line, they made a statement to end 2024-25 by dominating the Islanders, 6-1, to make it six games in a row and claim their 40th win of the campaign.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first period. Then the Blue Jackets stepped on the accelerator. Five different players scored in the second – Cole Sillinger (11), Dante Fabbro (9), Dmitri Voronkov (23), Sean Kuraly (6), and Zach Werenski (23). Through the first two frames, Columbus goalie Jet Greaves stopped all 26 shots that came his way and the Jackets led 5-0.
Both teams scored in the third period, Hudson Fasching for the Isles and Adam Fantilli for the Blue Jackets. It was Fantilli’s 31st goal of the season, tying him with Kirill Marchenko for the team lead. Four players ended up playing in all 82 games for Columbus – Fantilli, Kuraly, Ivan Provorov, and Mathieu Olivier.
Greaves played the final five games of the season, posting incredible numbers. In his five wins, he recorded two shutouts, had a goals allowed/game mark of 0.80, and a save percentage of .978. He will now head back, along with Denton Mateychuk, to the Cleveland Monsters for the rest of their season for additional experience.
