The Columbus Fury (8-16) came into their Friday night match against the Orlando Valkyries (14-10) with a three-game winning streak on the line. Unfortunately, the Valkyries had other ideas and swept the Fury, 3-0.
With the season coming down the stretch, PVF teams are battling for the top four slots to make the championship matches in Las Vegas, Nev. in May. Orlando is in the third position despite having lost three of their last four matches before facing the Fury. Besides their winning streak, Friday’s match was the final home match for Columbus this season. So both squads had a lot to play for.
Led by Brittany Abercrombie, Orlando dominated the match. Abercrombie, a seven-year pro out of USC, led all players with 19 kills and a kill rate of 59%. Rookie Natalie Foster recorded six service aces on the night.
For the Fury, Janice Leao paced the team for the first time this season with seven kills. Setter Nootsara Tomkom had 24 assists to lead Columbus and libero Paula Cerame posted 10 digs.
The Fury now head to the road for their final four matches – Omaha on April 25, Orlando on April 27, San Diego on May 1, and Vegas on May 4. Columbus is in last place in the PVF standings and will most likely not qualify for the championship rounds in Las Vegas.
