The Columbus Clippers hit three home runs in their series finale with the Louisville Bats at Huntington Park Sunday and kept the Bats in the ballpark, but Louisville won the battle, 7-4, with the help of a Columbus error in the fifth inning.
The Clippers jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Will Brennan homered to lead off the inning. It was his second long ball of the season. Louisville took the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs, three of them unearned. A throwing error allowed runs to be scored on a fielder’s choice, then a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
Columbus fought back with a run in the bottom of the fifth on Dom Nuñez’s third round-tripper of the campaign. The Clips added two more in the eighth on a two-run blast from Milan Tolentino, his second home run this season. That pulled the Clippers to within one run going to the ninth.
Louisville added two runs in the top of the inning, both coming in after another error in the Clippers’ infield. Columbus got two aboard in the bottom of the ninth, both via singles, to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs. A strikeout ended the Clippers’ chances.
Columbus starter Kolby Allard gave up just one run on four hits in his 4.1 innings of work, but did not figure into the decision. The loss was suffered by reliever Nick Mikolajchak (1-1), who threw only 0.2 innings and gave up no earned runs in the fifth. Sam Benschoter (1-0) earned the win, throwing an inning of relief for the Bats.
The Clippers get a day off before beginning a six-game series Tuesday in Allentown, Penn. against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park.
