The Columbus Clippers were looking to get back on the winning side after falling in five straight games, four of them to start their series against Lehigh Valley in Allentown, Penn. Saturday’s contest with the IronPigs went back and forth before the Clippers scored three in the tenth inning to claim an 8-5 victory.

Columbus scored first with a run in the first inning. Johnathan Rodriguez singled to drive in Petey Halpin, who led off the game with a triple. Each team scored four runs in the middle innings. It was Halpin and Rodriguez again for Columbus in the third. when Halpin walked and Rodriguez went deep for his second home run of the season.

In the fifth, it was the same two guys for the Clippers. Halpin hit a solo shot to open the inning. Three batters later, Rodriguez singled to drive in another run. Going to the bottom of the ninth inning, Columbus led 5-4, but the IronPigs tied the score with a Rodolfo Castro infield single with the bases loaded.

In the tenth, Columbus was able to take a commanding lead. Halpin was the runner that started at second base. Chris Cairo moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez walked with two outs. Then Dom Nuñez went over the right-center field wall to make it 8-5. It was Nuñez’s fifth home run this season.

Clippers’ reliever Bradley Hanner (3-1) worked out of a couple of jams in the bottom of the tenth inning to nail down the victory. He picked up his third win of the campaign. Carter Spivey came out of the bullpen in the fifth and threw four scoreless innings for the Clips, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

The teams tangle one more time in this series. The game Sunday will begin at 1:35 p.m. Parker Messick (1-1) takes the mound for the Clippers and will face Lehigh Valley’s Ranger Suárez (1-0). They faced off in the first game of the series on Tuesday, which the IronPigs won, 7-3.
