The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (14-2), who won the Big Ten regular season title with a 10-8 victory at Michigan on April 19, was right back in Ann Arbor Saturday to face the Maryland Terrapins (11-3) in the conference’s tournament championship. The Buckeyes took a big first quarter lead and held on for a 14-10 win.
Ohio State scored the first five goals in the opening frame and led 6-1 going into the second quarter. The Terps never got closer than three goals the rest of the way. Eight different Buckeyes scored in the contest. Garrett Haas led the way with three.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Fyock stopped 19 shots and earned the tournament’s most outstanding player award, only the second keeper to do so. Fyock is now 14-1 with an incredible season save percentage of .620.
Maryland was one of two teams to top the Bucks this season with a win in Columbus on April 12. The other loss was to Utah in the opener way back on October 13. Saturday’s victory made the Buckeyes an automatic qualifier for the NCAA DI tournament. It ws the first time that OSU won the Big Ten tournament.
Ohio State will begin NCAA tourney action as the #4 seed next Sunday at home against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (8-4) starting at noon. The winner of that game will play the winner of #5 Penn State (10-4) and Colgate (10-7) the following weekend in Hempstead, N.Y. Maryland is the third Big Ten team to qualify for the NCAAs and is the #2 seed.
