After scoring just one run total in two losses to start their series in Rochester, the Columbus Clippers found a way to score more on Thursday. The Clippers led 7-5 going to the bottom of the ninth inning, but gave up two runs in the ninth and one in the ensuing tenth to fall 8-7.
The game started oddly when Columbus scored three runs in the top of the first inning, two driven in by Rochester balks. The Red Wings responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Clippers starter Aaron Davenport, who was pulled after giving up three runs in his Triple-A debut last week against Iowa, threw 4.1 innings this time, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks.
After Rochester took a 5-3 lead in the fourth, Columbus tied the game with two runs in the fifth on Brayan Rocchio’s third home run of the season. The Clippers added a run in the seventh when Petey Halpin went deep, then added another in the ninth on a Halpin sacrifice fly.
The Red Wings scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, the second run coming home on a two-out single from Drew Millas. In the tenth, Columbus had a runner at third base with one out, but two strikeouts took them out of the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Rochester loaded the bases with one out. A walk to slugger Brady House brought in the winning run.
The loss was charged to reliever Mason Hickman (1-2). Jack Sinclair (3-1) picked up the win for the Red Wings. The teams are back it Friday beginning at 6:45 p.m. Lefty Doug Nikhazy (2-3, 4.17) takes the hill for Columbus and Andrew Alvarez (0-5, 4.70) gets the start for Rochester.
