In their four games at Rochester this week, the Columbus Clippers have lost all four, but in two different ways. On Monday and Wednesday, the Clips managed only one run on seven hits total and lost 4-0 and 5-1. On Thursday and Friday, they took multi-run leads to the bottom of the ninth only to watch the Red Wings walk off with a win.
It was a game of wild swings Friday at Rochester’s Innovative Field. The Red Wings scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning against Columbus starter Doug Nikhazy. Nikhazy would not figure into the decision, however, as the Clippers found ways to put nine runs on the board through the eighth inning.
Johnathan Rodriguez and David Fry hit home runs for Columbus, while Christian Cairo, Petey Halpin, Brayan Rocchio, and Chase DeLauter posted doubles. Rochester added a run in the fourth inning to set up a second straight night in which the Clippers took a lead into the ninth inning, this time 9-7.
The Red Wings loaded the bases with two singles and a walk to start the ninth. A groundout cut the Columbus lead to one with two runners remaining in scoring position. Nick Schnell then doubled to bring both runners home for the 10-9 walk-off victory. Franco Aleman (0-1) was charged with his first loss of the season.
The Clippers will look for their first win of the series Saturday with the first pitch slated for 6:45 p.m. Parker Messick (3-1, 2.95) will take the mound for Columbus. Adrian Sampson (1-1, 4.35) gets the start for Rochester.
