The Columbus Crew traveled to South Florida for a match Saturday against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. One of the Crew’s two losses this MLS season came on April 19 at Cleveland’s Huntington Bank Field. On Saturday, the Herons took a 3-0 to the locker room at the break and added two goals in the second half for a 5-1 win.

Tadeo Allende got Miami on the board in the thirteenth minute. Then superstar Lionel Messi scored twice before halftime. With an assist on Allende’s score and the two goals after that, Messi became Miami’s all time leading scorer in MLS play. Columbus was unable to get a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Black & Gold scored in the 58th minute when defender Cesar Ruvalcaba took a left-side corner kick and headed the ball past goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo, who had entered the contest at the beginning of the half. Luis Suárez and Fafà Picault scored later in the half to nail down the victory.

When asked about what went wrong in the match, Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy noted, “Everything. They were better than us today. Also, before talking about tactics, I know that it was hot, humid and so on, but we were reactive not proactive. We were slow a bit, not only physically but also mentally.”

With the win, Miami leapfrogged the Crew into fourth place in the MLS’s Eastern Conference with Columbus falling to the fifth slot. Columbus has now gone six games without a win. The Black & Gold get two weeks off before hosting Vancouver on Saturday, June 14. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Lower.com Field.
