The Columbus Clippers were having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week in Rochester. Having lost five games, the last three on Red Wings’ walk-off efforts, the Clippers were looking for just one win Sunday before leaving town. However, Rochester scored two late runs in the finale and came away with a 4-3 victory.
Joey Cantillo was back with the Clippers for Sunday’s contest after spending the beginning of the season with the Cleveland Guardians. The left-hander went three innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out five. In his 21 appearances with the parent club this year, he is 1-0 with a save and an ERA of 3.81.
Columbus fell behind early in the game Sunday, giving up a Red Wings’ run in the first inning, but came back to take a 2-1 lead with a run in both the second and third innings. Yordys Valdes picked up an RBI with a groundout in the second, then Jonathan Rodríguez knocked in a run with a single in the third.
The Red Wings tied the game in the fifth inning with a run against Columbus reliever Luis Frías. They then took a 4-2 lead in the seventh with Zak Kent on the mound. Both Frías and Kent (0-2), who was charged with the loss, have been effective out of the bullpen this season. The Clippers got scoreless relief innings from Nick Mikolajchak and newcomer Matt Krook.
Columbus was able to chip away at the Rochester lead with a run in the eighth inning. C.J. Kayfus doubled to bring Brayan Rocchio home, but that was all the Clippers could manage in their seventh straight defeat. Rochester reliever Parker Dunshee (1-1) picked up the win, while Marquis Grissom, Jr. got his first save.
Columbus gets a day off Monday to travel back to Huntington Park, where they will begin a six-game series Tuesday with the Toledo Mud Hens. Will Dion (2-5, 4.50) will get the start for the Clippers in the opener.
