The Columbus Clippers got solid performances from both their offense and pitching corps Tuesday in Buffalo and came away with a 7-1 victory. Jhonkensy Noel, in just his third game back with the Clips, hit two home runs and knocked in four runs, while four Columbus pitchers combined to allow just one run on six hits.
Columbus got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the opening inning. Petey Halpin led the game off with his sixth home run of the season. After Chase DeLauter walked with one out, Noel hit his first long ball of the night.
In the sixth inning, Noel homered again with DeLauter on the basepaths. C.J. Kayfus followed with his sixth round-tripper of the campaign. Jake Anchia knocked in the Clippers’ final run of the game in that inning with a sacrifice fly.
Columbus starter Parker Messick blanked the Bisons for 4.2 innings, but did not figure into the decision. Reliever Will Dion (3-5) went 2.1 innings and picked up the win. Andrew Misiaszek and Zak Kent each pitched a shutout inning, retiring the three batters they faced.
With the win, the Clippers have a 2-1 edge in the series. Game four is Friday with the first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Columbus’s Austin Peterson (NR) will make his first Triple-A start. For Buffalo, it will be three-time Cy Young Award-winner Max Scherzer, who is on a rehab assignment from the Toronto Blue Jays.
