OSU's Bertrand sprints to solid finishes at NCAAs

Ohio State senior Leah Bertrand was one of 15 athletes that the Buckeyes sent to the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. At the end of the meet, she stood at the top of the team’s efforts with a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash and a fifth place spot in the 100 meter dash.

The native of Trinidad and Tobago has been a star for OSU beginning in her sophomore year as a member of both the indoor and outdoor squads. She helped the Buckeyes that year win the Big Ten’s indoor championships and place 2nd in the conference’s outdoor meet, specializing in the 60m, 100m, and 200m.

This season, she set an Ohio State record in the 100m at the NCAA DI’s first round in Jacksonville, Fla. with a 10.92 time. In Eugene, her 100m time was 11.21 on a slower track. USC’s Samirah Moody took first with an 11.14. In the 200m, Bertrand ran a 22.60 with South Carolina’s JaMeesia Ford finishing first with a time of 22.21.

OSU junior Janela Spencer finished sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.25. Oregon’s Aaliyah McCormick won the event with a 12.81. Sophomore D.J. Fillmore, a Licking Heights alum, long jumped 24’3.5″ for the Buckeyes, placing 19th in the men’s event, while senior Tanner Watson finished 24th in the men’s discus.
