The Columbus Crew took a 1-0 against Orlando City in the 66th minute on a penalty kick at Lower.com Field Friday. Shortly after that, in the space of just three minutes, Orlando took a 2-1 lead, adding a goal in extra time to beat the Black & Gold, 3-1.
The Crew’s goal came on Diego Rossi’s penalty kick after a VAR review showed that Orlando City had committed a handball infraction in their box. Ten minutes later, Orlando’s Ramiro Enrique took a pass from Iván Angulo and headed the ball into the right corner of the net for the equalizer.
In the 79th minute, the Lions took the lead when Angulo again sent a pass into the box that found Enrique off an attempted block by Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and Enrique kicked it into the goal. The Lions sealed the match on a Martín Ojeda goal six minutes into extra time.
Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy spoke about what the Crew needs to do to take advantage of more scoring opportunities, “There is all the time improvement. Sometimes you cannot explain certain things. Last time, we scored four goals and the momentum was there.”
He added, “This one, we had the momentum, but we didn’t finish the action, and it was many actions. Like I said, technique, tactic, mental, there are a lot of things within that. Tonight was not the day. We struggled to score.”
The Crew are back in action Tuesday, as they host Toluca of Liga MX in Leagues Cup play. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at Lower.com Field.
