On Saturday, the Columbus Blue Jackets played the second game of their first back-to-back effort this season. After falling to Washington at Nationwide Arena Friday, the Blue Jackets traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena.

Columbus was ahead 4-2 in the third period, but the Pens tied the score late and the contest went to overtime. Neither team scored in the extra period. The Blue Jackets prevailed in the shootout to capture the 5-4 victory.

It took the Penguins less than a minute to get on the scoreboard. Ryan Shea scored his first goal of the season just 59 seconds into the contest. With 4:16 left in the first period, Charlie Coyle scored his first goal as a Blue Jacket, with assists to Dante Fabbro and Cole Sillinger.

Pittsburgh retook the lead less than three minutes later when Anthony Mantha, who assisted on the first Penguins’ goal, scored to make it 2-1 Pittsburgh going into the first intermission.

Columbus evened the score again with less than three minutes remaining in the second period. Kent Johnson sent a perfect pass from the back wall to Dmitri Voronkov, positioned in front of the net, for a quick score.

The third period saw the Blue Jackets take a two-goal lead when Yegor Chinakhov recorded his first goal of the season and Voronkov added his second of the game. Pittsburgh tied the contest with two goals in two minutes at the 16:54 mark, first from Kris Letang, then Bryan Rust.

Neither team could add another goal in regulation, nor in the ensuing overtime period. In the shootout, the first five players scored for their respective teams. Columbus went first in each turn, so Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, and Kirill Marchenko all beat Pens’ goaltender Arturs Silovs.

The winning effort came from Blue Jackets’ goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who stopped the third Pittsburgh shooter, Evgeni Malkin. Columbus grabbed the road victory, 5-4. Merzlikins earned his third win of the season.

The Blue Jackets stay on the road for their next game, heading to Buffalo to take on the Sabres Tuesday at KeyBank Center beginning at 6:45 p.m.
