The #2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes women’s hockey team (9-1-0, 7-1-0) took both games against the #13 St. Thomas Tommies (7-5-0, 2-4-0) in St. Paul, Minn. this weekend. On Friday, the Buckeyes won 3-2 in overtime, taking Saturday’s contest by the final of 8-0.
In Friday’s tilt, OSU was down 1-0 in the first period when Hilda Svensson scored with 2:43 left in the frame. After the Tommies retook the lead in the third, Svensson again evened the score on a power play with just 2:14 left in regulation, sending the game into extra time. Sanni Vanhanen scored 1:37 into OT for the Buckeye win.
Saturday’s game was a much different story. Ohio State scored six goals in the second period after scoring once in the first to take a commanding lead. The Bucks added a goal in the third and the defense kept St. Thomas off the board for an 8-0 shutout win at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
Joy Dunne, Ohio State’s leading scorer last season, recorded a hat trick in the win Saturday. It was her second hatty in three games for the Buckeyes. She leads Ohio State with 12 goals this season, while Svensson tops the team with 18 points.Â
The Buckeyes return home for two games against Minnesota State (6-5-1, 2-5-1) on Nov. 14 and 15. Friday’s contest at OSU Ice Rink against the Mavericks starts at 6:00 p.m., while the puck drops on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Both games can be seen on the Big Ten+ Network.
