The Otterbein men’s soccer team was in Ada Sunday to play the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in the OAC championship match. It was a defensive battle throughout as both squads dealt with cold temperatures and eventually snow flurries. The Cardinals won their second straight OAC tournament title in extra-time penalty kicks.
Despite 11 shots on goal between the two teams, neither could score in regulation or in the two overtime periods. The title contest then went to penalty kicks.
Otterbein freshman goalkeeper Jayden Burdine, a Pickerington North grad, helped the Cardinals get to the overtime by stopping all seven shots that came his way, including a penalty kick in regulation.
Burdine saved the first shot of the Polar Bears’ five attempts in the penalty kicks round. All of the Cardinals made theirs. Otterbein’s final attempt came from Lincoln Wallace, an Olentangy Berlin alum, and he nailed it to clinch the victory.
With the win, the Cardinals earned the right, their third time in a row, to play in the Division III NCAA Tournament. They will find out their opponent, location, and time of their first game when the NCAA Selection Show airs on Monday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. on ncaa.com.
