The good news for the Columbus Blue Jackets is that they finally picked up a point on their current swing through the NHL’s Western Conference. The bad news is that it came in Edmonton Monday in an overtime loss in which the Blue Jackets were leading by a goal with 58 seconds remaining in the contest.
Things looked good for the Blue Jackets through two periods at Rogers Place. They led the Oilers 3-1. Within a minute after the start of the third, Connor McDavid scored to cut the lead to one. Just more than three minutes later, Columbus seemed to have righted the ship when Adam Fantilli recorded a goal to make it 4-2.
After that, it was all Edmonton. McDavid cut the margin again to one when he connected on a wrist shot with 5:21 left. After former Blue Jacket Jack Roslovic took a high-sticking penalty, Edmonton’s Jake Walman scored a short-handed goal with 58 seconds left in regulation to send the festivities to overtime.
Roslovic redeemed himself quickly when he scored just 56 seconds into extra time on a breakaway that caught the Jackets’ defense on a change. The heartbreaking outcome for Columbus was reminiscent of their loss in Buffalo eight days earlier when they gave up two goals in the last 1:07 to fall 3-2.
There is no rest for the weary, as the Blue Jackets end their trip with back-to-back games. Next up is Seattle Tuesday at Climate Pledge Arena. The opening face off is set for 10:00 p.m. EST.
