The Columbus Blue Jackets finished their four-game swing through the NHL’s Western Conference with a win at Seattle Tuesday. It was the second of back-to-back contests. The 2-1 shootout victory was the only win of the trip and put an end to a four-game losing streak.
The Kraken scored their only goal of regulation with 3:17 left in the first period. Ben Meyers found Ryan Winterton in the slot, who snapped a shot past Columbus goaltender Jet Greaves from short range.
The Blue Jackets tied the score at 1-1 in the second period. With under two minutes remaining in the frame, the Jackets found themselves near the end of a 5-on-3 opportunity. Adam Fantilli beat Seattle goalie Matt Murray from the right circle.
That’s all of the offense the two teams could muster in three periods plus overtime. In the resultant shootout, Greaves held the Kraken to one of four tries, while Columbus converted on two attempts, capped off by Charlie Coyle’s shot for the win.
Greaves, who earned his fourth save of the season, ended the night stopping 22 of 23 shots on goal. It was the first that head coach Dean Evason had opted to play one of his goaltenders in consecutive games. That may have had more to do with an illness that had made its way through the Blue Jackets’ roster on the trip.
Columbus will fly home Wednesday as they welcome the Edmonton Oilers to Nationwide Arena Thursday. The teams played at Rogers Place Monday and the Oilers came away with an overtime win after the Blue Jackets had a one-goal lead with 58 seconds remaining in the game.
