Three nights ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets fell on the road to the Edmonton Oilers in overtime. The Oilers scored twice in 1:54 to grab the victory, one toward the end of the fourth and one less than a minute into OT. The Jackets won at Seattle the next night and returned to Columbus for rematch with Edmonton Thursday.

Columbus’s third line recorded the first two goals of the night, when Mathieu Olivier scored in the first period and Charlie Coyle made it 2-0 just 44 seconds into the second. The Oilers tied the score midway through the period on goals from Matt Savoie and Leon Draisaitl.

Still in the second period, the Blue Jackets bounced back with two scores of their own. Denton Mateychuk and Adam Fantilli gave the Jackets a two-goal lead once again. At the 7:30 mark in the third, Olivier posted his second goal of the night and it looked as though the Blue Jackets might cruise to a win.

Fantilli scored for the third straight game. When asked if moving Fantilli to the line with Kirill Marchenko and Dmitri Voronkov had helped his performance, head Coach Dean Evason said, “I don’t think it’s necessarily because he got put on that line. I think, you know, we talk about reward all the time and he was doing the right thing as far as his work ethic, as far as his attention to detail, that’s what we’ve asked him to do.”

The Oilers went on the attack and it began to look like a repeat of Monday night at Rogers Place when Vasily Podkolzin scored 27 seconds after Olivier, then Draisaitl added his second goal with 8:33 left. The Blue Jackets’ defense dug deep to hold onto the lead and came away with a 5-4 win despite being outshot in the third, 13-4.

“Feels like we controlled most of the play, but they’re extremely dangerous,” said Olivier after the game. “Obviously, some of the best players in the world over there. So, you know, it’s not an easy task to shut them down, but we found a way and it’s all that matters in the end.”

The win came before a capacity crowd at Nationwide Arena on Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Many survivors and their family members were recognized throughout the game and the message about the importance of early screening was the salient takeaway for those in attendance.

The Blue Jackets are next on the ice Saturday when the New York Rangers come to Nationwide Arena for a game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
