The Columbus Blue Jackets are part of the clump of teams vying for a playoff spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference. Every point in the condensed, pre-Olympics schedule is valuable. The Jackets came out of their game at Detroit Saturday with one point, falling in overtime to the Red Wings. It came after leading by two goals in the third period.
Fans at Blue Jackets games in November have been getting their money’s worth. For the sixth time in their last eight outings, Saturday’s contest went to extra time. After beating Toronto in a shootout Thursday, Columbus found themselves up 3-1 halfway through the third period at Little Caesars Arena.
When asked after the game whether failing to secure wins when leading in the third period has crept into the team’s psyche, Blue Jackets head coach Dean Evason said, “Our staff’s more focused on just playing the right way, consistently through the whole game. We’re not going to focus on, you know, just one period.”
Columbus’s three goals came from familiar names. Adam Fantilli continued his hot streak, scoring in the first period on the power play. Miles Wood added a score in the second and Zach Werenski, who assisted on Fantilli’s goal, had one of his own in the third.
“We just want to keep playing our game and keep doing what we do,” noted Werenski. “I felt like the last two games in the third, although we’ve, you know, lost leads, I felt like they’ve been pretty good third priods for us.”
The Blue Jackets are 1-1-1 on their current road trip with one more game to go before returning home. They travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals Monday. The puck drop at Capital One Arena is slated for 7:00 p.m.
