OWU tops Capital in early battle of top area teams

The Ohio Wesleyan and Capital women’s basketball teams squared off Tuesday, each with only one loss on the season. The OWU Battling Bishops were ranked #16 nationally, while the Comets were unranked. It was an important non-conference contest for both squads.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle with the teams going to the halftime break at Branch Rickey Arena in Delaware tied at 34-34. The Bishops took control of the contest in the third quarter, outscoring Capital 22-9, and cruised to a 68-53 win.
OWU’s Macy Miller, a Fairbanks alum, led all scorers with 20 points. Miller is averaging a double-double for the Bishops this season, leading the team in both scoring (16.3/game) and rebounding (11.6/game). Delaware grad Alyssa Griner added 11 points for Ohio Wesleyan.
Pacing the Comets was their leading scorer, Samaree Perkins. She posted 17 points, while Tahirah Ellis, a Pickerington Central alum, had 16. Perkins is also averaging a double-double on the season, posting 20.5 points/game and 12.8 rebounds/game. Ellis leads the Comets with 19 blocks, while Gahanna’s Kya Wilson has 31 assists.
Ohio Wesleyan (6-1, 1-0 NCAC) heads to Nashville, Tenn. this weekend for two games in the Music City Classic – Berry on Friday (6:00 p.m.) and Simpson on Saturday (8:00 p.m.). Both games can be seen on the Welch College (Tenn.) YouTube channel.
Capital (8-2, 2-1 OAC) returns to conference play with a home game against Top 25-ranked Baldwin Wallace Saturday. The tip-off at The Capital Center Performance Arena in Bexley is slated for noon. Fans can catch all of the action on FloCollege.
