The #2-ranked Ohio State football team was a prohibitive favorite going into their CFP game with the #10 Miami Hurricanes at the Cotton Bowl Wednesday night. The Hurricanes, however, took advantage of a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown and five sacks to beat the Buckeyes, 24-14.
In the first quarter, Ohio State ran only seven offensive plays, mostly because of a long Miami drive that resulted in a lost fumble at the OSU 19-yard line. The Hurricanes posted a 7-0 lead on their next drive, taking eight minutes off the clock spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second.
The Buckeyes responded with a 59-yard pass from Julian Sayin to Jeremiah Smith that took them to the Miami 16-yard line. After a sack, Sayin threw an interception that Keionte Scott returned 72 yards for a Hurricane touchdown. As time wound down in the half, OSU kicker Jayden Fielding missed a 49-yard field goal.
The Buckeyes bounced back to begin the second half, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions. The first score came on an 11-play, 82-yard drive, which culminated with a Bo Jackson one-yard run. The second was on a 4th-down pass from Sayin to Jeremiah Smith from 14 yards out.
The Hurricanes made a field goal in-between the two Ohio State touchdowns. With 13:28 left in the fourth quarter, it was Miami up 17-14. After the ‘Canes punted on their next drive, the Buckeyes managed only six yards on seven plays, hampered by another sack and two penalties.
Miami sealed the game with a 10-play 70-yard drive that lasted five minutes and resulted in a 5-yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left. Sayin then threw a desperation interception and the ‘Canes came away with the victory. Miami will now face the winner of the Georgia-Ole Miss game to be played Thursday.
