The #19-ranked Ohio State women’s basketball team (14-2, 4-1) was in Champaign, Ill. Wednesday to take on the Illini (13-3, 3-2) in a key Big Ten tilt. Behind Jaloni Cambridge’s career-high 41-point performance, the Buckeyes dished out Illinois’ first home-court loss of the season, 78-69.
Illinois led after the opening quarter, 22-19. The Buckeyes evened things up at 36-36 going to the locker room at intermission. The teams went back and forth in the third quarter with OSU taking a six-point lead to the fourth. Illinois got as close as four points in the final frame, but Ohio State was strong down the stretch for the win.
Jaloni Cambridge became the first Buckeye to score 40 points in a game against a Big Ten opponent since Kelsey Mitchell posted 43 against Rutgers on March 4, 2016. Cambridge had only two treys on the night, making 15-25 shots from the field and nine points from the free throw line.
Chance Gray added 18 points for the Buckeyes, with Kylee Kitts chipping in with 10. Elsa Lemmilä grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jaloni Cambridge also paced Ohio State with six assists.
The Buckeyes stay on the road, traveling to College Park, Md. Sunday for a conference contest with the #8-ranked Maryland Terrapins. The game, which can be seen on Peacock, tips off at 4:00 p.m.
