On Thursday night at Nationwide Arena, it was a time for the Columbus Blue Jackets and their fans to celebrate. Charlie Coyle, new to the club this season but a veteran of the NHL, played in his 1,000th league game, an important milestone in the career of a professional hockey player.
He was recognized prior to the game with his teammates all wearing #3 jerseys in warmups. Then he received a standing ovation from the 5th Line when announcements were made during introductions and at the first stoppage of play. There would be additional recognition after the game – more about that in a moment.

In town to face Columbus were the Dallas Stars, who were tied for second in the NHL’s Western Conference coming into the contest. The Blue Jackets played perhaps their best defensive game of the season, posting their first shutout of the campaign, and nabbed a 1-0 victory.
The only goal of the game came in the first period when Zach Werenski posted his team-leading 19th tally of the season. After taking a pass from Damon Severson, Werenski sent a shot past the Stars’ goaltender Casey DeSmith, helped by a screen from teammate Danton Heinen at the top of the crease.
Jackets’ goalie Jet Greaves made saves on all 28 Dallas shots to earn the win. The defense in front of him was stellar. Columbus outpaced the Stars in hits, 35-7, and blocked shots, 17-10.

After the game, the Blue Jackets did not head into the tunnel on the way to their locker room. They remained on the ice and sent Coyle to the center of the rink to once again be cheered by the crowd. They then surrounded him to celebrate the moment. Once in the room, they sprayed him with water in front of his stall.
Columbus remains at home, welcoming the Tampa Bay Lightning to Nationwide Arena Saturday with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
