It was senior night for the undefeated and #2-ranked Ohio State wrestling squad (17-0, 6-0 Big Ten), as they ended their home schedule with #5 Iowa (9-5, 2-3 Big Ten) in front of a sellout crowd of 4,749 at the Covelli Center Friday.
Senior and grad wrestlers Carter Chase, a Marion Pleasant alum, Peyton Fenton, Paddy Gallagher, Carson Kharchla, an Olentangy Liberty grad, and Jesse Mendez were met with a sustained standing ovation as they were recognized prior to the dual meet with the Hawkeyes.
Iowa captured the first three matches to take a 9-0 lead. The Buckeyes then reeled off seven straight wins to take the meet 24-9. Mendez, ranked #1 in the country at 141 lbs, sealed Ohio State’s 17th victory of the season by technical fall. The Buckeyes’ 17-0 record is the best at this point of the season in program history.
OSU still has two road meets before the Big Ten Tournament starts on Saturday, March 7 at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center. The Buckeyes will get a preview of the venue when they take on the #1 Nittany Lions in Big Ten action next Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m. The matchup in State College, Penn. can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
