The Columbus Crew (0-2-2) have yet to win a match in four outings this season. On Saturday, they lost, 1-0, to Nashville SC (3-1-0) on a Hany Mukhtar goal four minutes into second-half stoppage time at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field.
With the shutout loss, the Black & Gold have yet to score a goal at home after recording a 0-0 draw last week against the visiting Chicago Fire (1-1-2).
“I‘ve talked about it before that we try to help our attacking players as much as possible because they have that quality,” said head coach Henrik Rydström after the match. “If they are too alone and they don’t have options around them, then they will be isolated. I don’t want to have that.”
We changed and played more of a 4-2-3-1 today or [4]-4-2. I think there were a lot of promising things the whole way until the end product. We didn’t create enough – of course, it’s quite clear – but it was also a lot of half-situations. I think in the first half we won the ball nine times on their half. We didn’t create one big chance from that.”
It looked as though the Crew took the lead in the first half on a shot from Taha Habroune after he played a rebound off the post on a try from Max Arfsten from the top of the box. After VAR review, it was determined that Arfsten was offside when he received the ball.
“(It was) definitely frustrating,” noted Arfsten. “I think we all feel that we need to create more quality chances on offense and just get ourselves into more dangerous situations and positions and, yeah, it’s been frustrating. I think it’s just a work in progress, and there’s nothing we can do besides keep working and just try to improve on that end.”
The Crew are back in action next Saturday as they travel north of the border to take on Toronto FC (1-1-2). Toronto posted a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls (2-1-1) Saturday at BMO Field.
