The Columbus Crew’s Diego Rossi scored in the 80th minute to tie the Black & Gold’s match with Orlando City SC Sunday night at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field and the contest ended in a 1-1 draw. The result added a point in the standings for the Crew, who are now in the 11th spot in the MSL’s Eastern Conference. Here are our three takeaways from Sunday’s action:

1.    The Crew dominated in every statistical category Sunday. Here’s a rundown: shots (20-5), shots on target (7-1), possession percentage (60.4 to 39.4), expected goals (2.2-0.6), corners (8-1), and blocked shots (8-2). When scoring opportunities become goals at a better rate, this team will start racking up wins rather than spending its time on the pitch just keeping up.

2.   The Columbus defense is keeping the Black & Gold competitive. On Sunday, Orlando City managed only one shot at the net … and it went in. Regarding that one opportunity, head coach Henrik Rydström said, “We didn’t keep the ball like we usually do. We gave them transition moments. It was not maybe a clear transition when they scored, but we didn’t look good in that part.” But, that was the only Orlando chance.

3.   The biggest news out of the match Sunday was the knee injury suffered by Wessam Abou Ali. We’ll know more about the severity of injury this week. He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after coming out of the lineup and being reinserted earlier in the match. About the decision to put Abou Ali back into the action, Rydström said, “Nobody did anything wrong, and you can have bad luck anyway.”

The Crew have two road matches this week. They play at Richmond in a U.S. Open Cup contest Wednesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. The match with the Kickers can be seen on YouTube. The Black & Gold return to MSL play Saturday with a match at New England’s Gillette Stadium, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. It will be streamed on Apple TV.
