The Columbus Crew had a 1-0 lead at halftime against the New England Revolution Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Two New England goals in the second half, including a penalty kick conversion in the 85th minute, gave the Revolution a 2-1 victory. It’s already the fourth loss for the Black & Gold. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s match:
1. It’s officially “start to be worried” time for the Crew, especially with their offensive attack. In their eight MLS outings thus far this season, they have scored more than two goals only once. That was a 3-1 win in Atlanta earlier this month. They’re averaging 1.25 goals per MLS contest and have been shut out twice. Adding to the concern is the loss of Wessam Abou Ali for the season with a knee injury. He was brought in last season to help with scoring.
2. If the offense was doing anything, the discussion about the Black & Gold would center around how stingy their defense is. The Crew have allowed more than two goals in only one match this season. That was in the opener at Portland, a 3-2 defeat. The two goals in the second half Saturday came as the offense’s possession time lessened. New England managed only three shots on goal for the entire game.
3. It appears that frustration is growing within the Crew ranks. On the pitch, the Black & Gold committed 12 fouls, including three yellow cards. Max Arfsten, who scored the Crew’s only goal, said after the match, “It’s tough right now. There’s no sugar coating it. It’s a tough run of form. And we all have been a part of winning teams with this club, so we know this is not the standard and we definitely want something different for ourselves, in terms of results and giving the fans what they want.”
