Clippers Will Dion throws from mound

After taking a beating the night before, the Columbus Clippers bounced back with a solid 5-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Saturday at Huntington Park. The Clippers’ bullpen worked the final six innings and did not give up a run, allowing the offense to rally for the victory. Here are our three takeaways from Saturday’s action:

1.    Columbus reliever Will Dion (2-0) is in his third season with the club. He has gone from a starter in 2024 to a part-time starter in 2025 to a full-time reliever so far this season. On Saturday, he had the best outing of his ten appearances. He entered the ballgame in the top of the fourth with the Clippers down 3-1. He struck out Toledo’s Corey Julks to end the inning and then went three more. The left-hander allowed only one hit, no walks, and struck out seven to pick up the win.

2.   Maick Collado has now played seven games for the Clippers since being called up from Single-A Lake County on April 26. He has logged exactly zero Double-A games in his young career. All he’s done is get at least one hit in all seven contests, including five doubles. He was an “organizational” promotion, i.e. the Clips needed a solid-fielding infielder to fill a hole and there he was … in Single-A. Seeing a brief sample of his talent – his batting average is .360 in Columbus – he is making a case for himself.

3.   Juan Brito is a good character guy. Anyone who’s hung around the Clippers since the 24-year-old arrived in Columbus in 2023 knows that. The Guardians called the second baseman up for the first time in April and he struggled. He came back to Columbus this week when top prospect Travis Bazzana, also a second baseman, was called up. How has Brito taken it? He’s been in the lineup every day and, on Saturday, he hit his first home run of the season. That’s how.

Columbus and Toledo wrap up their six-game series Sunday at Huntington Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. RHP Austin Peterson (0-0, 0.00), who has made one start after coming off the injured list, will climb the hill for the Clippers. RHP Ty Madden (2-0, 4.71) gets the call for the Mud Hens.
